Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
Schluter driveway and paver systems in Fort Lauderdale typically need replacement or repair when the drainage layer fails, edge restraint loosens, or the paver surface shifts under our constant humidity and afternoon downpours. Installed repair costs here generally run $350 to $2,800 depending on how much of the system has failed and whether the substrate (the compacted base layer underneath) needs rebuilding. Most driveway paver repairs take one to two days on site.

What usually brings a homeowner to this page is a sunken section near the driveway apron, water pooling against the garage door, or pavers that wobble when you walk across them. One of those three things, almost every time. What you’re looking at isn’t just a paver problem. It’s a base problem, a drainage problem, or an edge problem. And Schluter’s system is specific enough that the fix needs to match the original install or the failure comes back next wet season.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a few different systems used under and around driveways and paver patios. The one most Fort Lauderdale homeowners run into is the Schluter TROBA line, their drainage and uncoupling layer that sits between the substrate and the finished surface. TROBA and TROBA-PLUS are the two we see most on driveway edges and paver transitions. There’s also Schluter BARA edge profiles that hold the paver perimeter in place, and Schluter DITRA-DRAIN used where a driveway slopes toward a garage door or entry.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: TROBA-PLUS has a thicker profile than standard TROBA, and if you’re replacing a failed section you need to match the original thickness or your finished paver height will be off by a quarter inch or more. That quarter inch is the difference between water sheeting away from your garage and water running straight under the door. Measure the thickness of the layer you’re replacing before you buy anything.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we install genuine Schluter components when the system is still under warranty or when the original install used Schluter profiles at the edges. For paver replacements themselves, we source from Belgard and Unilock, which are the paver brands that pair cleanly with Schluter drainage systems in South Florida’s climate. Aftermarket drainage sheets exist, but we don’t use them on driveway applications. The compression strength differs, and a driveway carries a lot more weight than a patio.
Penhallow Remodeling Fort Lauderdale is an independent contractor. We are not affiliated with Schluter, and we don’t claim to be. We install and repair their products because the systems work when they’re matched correctly.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Pavers sinking near the driveway edges. This almost always means the edge restraint has let go or was never installed. Without a solid edge, the whole paver field slowly walks outward and drops. We see this constantly on homes near Victoria Park and Coral Ridge where older driveways were done without Schluter BARA profiles.
- Water pooling against the garage door after rain. The DITRA-DRAIN layer or the slope underneath has failed, so water that used to channel away is now sitting where it rots your garage threshold. In Fort Lauderdale’s wet season, this shows up fast and worsens quickly.
- White chalky residue spreading across pavers. That’s efflorescence, which happens when water moves through the substrate and pulls minerals up through the paver joints. It means the drainage layer below isn’t shedding water the way it was designed to.
- Pavers rocking or clicking when you walk on them. A wobbler means the base has voided out under that spot. The substrate compacted unevenly, or water has carved a channel underneath. It won’t fix itself, and it gets worse the longer it goes.
- Weeds pushing up between pavers in straight lines. Weeds come through joints that have opened up because the system is shifting. If you’re pulling the same weeds every month, the sand joint filler has failed and water is getting where it shouldn’t.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Fort Lauderdale specifically, here’s what you’re looking at:
- Paver re-leveling and joint refill: $350 – $700 depending on the square footage affected.
- Edge restraint repair with Schluter profiles: $600 – $1,400 including materials and re-compaction of the perimeter.
- Partial substrate rebuild with new Schluter drainage layer: $1,200 – $2,800 for sections up to roughly 200 square feet.
- Full driveway replacement including pavers: $7,000 – $18,000 for a standard two-car Fort Lauderdale driveway, which matches the paver driveway installation range we quote across the area.
What drives the number up or down is how much of the base you’re rebuilding, how thick the original Schluter layer was, and whether we’re matching an existing paver pattern or starting fresh. Every job gets a written price before any work starts. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice, and the repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it fails inside that year, we come back and make it right at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the visual checks yourself. Walk the driveway after a hard rain and mark where water pools. Run your hand along the edge where pavers meet the lawn and feel for gaps. Pull a couple of weeds and see if the sand joint filler crumbles or comes out in chunks. Those observations help you know what you’re working with before you pick up the phone.
Here’s where DIY goes wrong on this specific repair: the substrate. Compacted base, proper slope, drainage layer placement, and edge restraint all have to work together, and in Fort Lauderdale’s sandy, fast-draining soil you don’t have much margin for error. Re-leveling pavers without fixing the compaction underneath is how you get the same sinking section six weeks later, which is exactly what Trevor Nash sees when a homeowner patches it themselves first and calls us second. The repair is not dangerous to DIY the way a garage door spring is, but it is easy to do in a way that just delays the real fix.
If you’d rather get it right once, call (754) 551-2922. We’ll walk the driveway, tell you what’s actually failed, and give you a written number. Trevor’s way of putting it: “Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, then we’ll get it done.”
FAQs

In Fort Lauderdale’s climate, a properly installed Schluter drainage layer under pavers typically lasts 15 to 25 years, while the pavers themselves can go 30 years or more with periodic joint refilling. The system usually fails before the pavers do, and it fails from water intrusion and edge movement rather than age alone.
Usually yes, if the failure is localized. A sunken section under thirty square feet can often be repaired by lifting the pavers, re-compacting the base, and replacing just that section of the drainage layer without touching the rest of the driveway. We’ll tell you if your failure is localized or systemic before we quote anything.
Most repairs take one to two days on site for Fort Lauderdale homes, including base compaction, drainage layer replacement, paver re-laying, and joint filling. Full driveway replacements typically run three to five days depending on size and whether we’re matching existing patterns.
We carry Schluter TROBA, TROBA-PLUS, DITRA-DRAIN, and BARA edge profiles in common sizes, along with Belgard and Unilock pavers for replacements. We also source parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products when the repair is tied to a patio kitchen or adjacent hardscape feature. If we don’t have your exact profile on the truck, we can source it same week. Call (754) 551-2922 and we’ll check stock while you’re on the phone.
