Sakrete Driveway & Pavers: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
Sakrete driveway and paver work in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $3,500 – $18,000 installed, depending on whether you’re pouring a concrete driveway or laying interlocking pavers. We stock Sakrete-compatible bag mixes, edge restraints, polymeric sand, and paver base materials, and our crew can match your existing surface or start fresh. Most Fort Lauderdale owners call us after a summer downpour turns their paver joints into little rivers, or when a cracked concrete slab starts tilting toward the street and the HOA notices before you do.

Here’s the truth about Sakrete products down here: the materials are solid, but South Florida puts them through a test the product data sheets don’t fully prepare you for. Salt air, hurricane-season rains, and a water table that sits ridiculously close to the surface all work against concrete and paver joints. We’ve torn out plenty of driveways in Victoria Park and Rio Vista where the concrete was fine at year two and finished at year seven. The fix usually isn’t fancier concrete. It’s better subsurface prep and drainage, which is exactly where our written scope saves you money on the back end.
We’re an independent Fort Lauderdale remodeling contractor, not affiliated with Sakrete. What we do is source the right Sakrete product for your job, price the labor honestly, and stand behind the finished surface with our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it fails inside that year, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing before the first bag gets opened.
Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete doesn’t make ” driveway models” the way an appliance brand makes refrigerators. They make bagged concrete mixes, paver base, sand, sealers, and repair products. The compatibility question is really about which Sakrete product line matches which stage of your driveway or paver project.
- High-Strength Concrete Mix (4000 PSI): The standard for driveway slabs and paver setting beds. We use this for full driveways, aprons, and walkways where vehicle weight is a factor.
- Paver Base and Paver Leveling Sand: Sakrete’s polymeric sand (joint sand that hardens) is the product Fort Lauderdale homeowners ask about most. Regular sand washes out of paver joints in one rainy season. Polymeric sand locks up and resists ants, weeds, and washout.
- Flo-Coat Concrete Resurfacer: For driveways that are structurally sound but cosmetically rough. This is the resurfacing layer, not a structural fix.
- Top ‘n Bond Concrete Patcher: For spalling (surface flaking) and edge chips. Good for small repairs, not a permanent solution for a cracked slab with a shifting base.
The gotcha with Sakrete specifically: each product line has a working time and a cure requirement printed on the bag, and those numbers assume a mild, dry climate. In Fort Lauderdale’s humidity, polymeric sand sometimes needs a second activation pass with water, and concrete pours in July can flash-set if you start after 10 a.m. We adjust the mix timing and the pour schedule around the weather, not the other way around. An honest aftermarket equivalent would be Quikrete, but the two brands aren’t interchangeable bag-for-bag without adjusting the water ratio, and we don’t mix brands mid-pour on a structural slab.

Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Paver joints keep washing out after every rain. This means the joint sand was never polymeric, or it was installed without proper compaction. Every Stormwater Advisory in Fort Lauderdale turns those joints into mini drainage channels, and the pavers start shifting within months.
- Hairline cracks spider-webbing across the concrete slab. Usually a sign of insufficient expansion joints or a base that wasn’t compacted before the pour. In Fort Lauderdale’s sandy soil, the base settles unevenly, and the slab fights itself.
- One corner of the driveway sits visibly lower than the curb. This is settlement, not a surface crack. Patching the surface won’t fix it. The base underneath has failed, and that section needs to come out, get re-compacted, and be repoured.
- White, chalky crust flaking off the surface (spalling). Salt air and poor curing cause the top layer to break down. Fort Lauderdale driveways near the Intracoastal see this faster than homes further west. A resurfacer can buy time, but the root cause is usually a pour that dried too fast.
- Pavers have shifted into a wavy, uneven surface. When the base layer erodes from underneath, pavers tilt and rock. Walking across feels like stepping on loose teeth. The fix is lifting the affected section, re-leveling the base, and re-setting the pavers with fresh polymeric sand.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here are the real installed price ranges for Fort Lauderdale driveway and paver work, parts and labor included:
| Job Type | Installed Price Range |
|---|---|
| Concrete driveway installation (Sakrete High-Strength mix) | $4,500 – $12,000 |
| Paver driveway installation | $7,000 – $18,000 |
| Full driveway replacement (tear-out and re-pour) | $5,000 – $14,000 |
| Driveway sealing | $250 – $700 |
| Paver patio installation | $3,500 – $11,000 |
| Paver re-sand and joint repair | $500 – $1,500 |
What drives the higher end: a long driveway, deep tear-out (old concrete has to go somewhere), paver style, drainage corrections, and whether we’re matching an existing surface or starting clean. The lower end comes from a straightforward pour on a compacted base with standard expansion joints. Your written price includes the Sakrete materials, site prep, hauling, finishing, and our workmanship guarantee on the completed surface. No change orders when we hit a buried tree root. If it’s not in the scope, we tell you before it’s a bill.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely tackle most of what goes wrong with paver joints on your own: cleaning out loose sand, sweeping in fresh Sakrete polymeric sand, and doing the water activation pass. It’s dusty, dull work, but it’s not dangerous.
What goes wrong in DIY is the structural layer. Mixing and pouring a concrete driveway slab in South Florida humidity is not a weekend project. Too much water weakens the mix. Too little, and it won’t consolidate. A slab that’s poured on uncompacted sand will crack within two years, and now you’re paying for tear-out plus the repour. The same goes for lifting a sunken paver section: if the base under it has washed away, re-sanding the top won’t hold. For the structural work, call a contractor who puts the scope and price in writing. Call us at (754) 551-2922 and we’ll come out, look at the actual condition of your base, and hand you a number you can hold.
FAQs

A properly installed concrete driveway using Sakrete High-Strength mix lasts 20 – 30 years in Fort Lauderdale, though spalling may appear sooner near the Intracoastal. Pavers should last 25 – 40 years because individual units can be re-leveled, but the base layer and joint sand need maintenance every 3 – 5 years in our climate. If your surface is failing in under a decade, the problem is almost always prep and drainage, not the Sakrete product itself. Call (754) 551-2922 for a look at what’s actually happening under your surface.
Hairline surface cracks can be filled with a concrete patcher and the slab sealed afterward, buying you a few years. But if one side of the crack sits higher than the other, or the slab is tilting toward a low corner, the base has moved and a patch will simply crack again. We’ll tell you honestly which one you’re dealing with during the estimate, and we only recommend full replacement when a repair can’t hold. Estimates are free.
A standard two-car concrete driveway pour runs 3 – 5 days: one day for tear-out and form setup, one for the pour, and concrete needs 3 – 7 days to cure before you can park on it. Paver driveways run 5 – 10 days depending on size, because the base compaction happens in layers. We give you a written schedule with your written price, and we show up inside the window we gave you. Call (754) 551-2922 to get a specific timeline for your driveway.
We keep Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix, paver base, leveling sand, polymeric sand, and concrete resurfacer in rotation for Fort Lauderdale jobs. For full driveway pours we order the materials fresh from our supplier, because bagged concrete has a shelf life and we won’t pour with stock that’s been sitting in a humid warehouse. If you need a specific Sakrete product for a repair, call us and we’ll confirm what we have or get it on the next supply run.
