Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

We install and repair Barrette-compatible paver driveways, patios, and walkways across Fort Lauderdale, with most replacements running $7,000 – $18,000 for a full driveway depending on square footage, base condition, and paver style. If you’re dealing with a sunken section, a crumbling edge, or pavers that have shifted out of alignment after a heavy storm season, we can usually diagnose the issue and schedule the repair within a few days. The most common way homeowners discover a problem: a paver that rocks underfoot, a low spot that pools water after rain, or a sand joint that has washed out completely.

Most Barrette paver failures we see aren’t actually failures of the paver itself. They’re failures of what’s underneath it. In Fort Lauderdale, the base material (crushed limestone and sand compacted beneath the pavers) takes a beating from our wet-dry cycles, high water table, and the occasional tropical storm surge. When the base settles or erodes, the pavers on top shift, sink, or spread. That’s the part you can’t see until it’s too late.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette Outdoor Living manufactures a rotating catalog of concrete paver profiles under several product families. The most common we see in Fort Lauderdale driveways and pool decks are the Holland stone, the 3-piece modular system, and the larger-format slab pavers (often 16″ x 16″ or 24″ x 24″). The compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Barrette changes color blends and texture finishes between production runs, so a paver bought three years ago may not match one bought today, even under the same name.

Before calling us, grab a photo of the back of a loose paver and look for a stamped code or embossed pattern. Manufacturers don’t print model numbers the way appliance makers do, so we identify by dimensions, thickness (typically 60mm or 80mm), edge style, and surface texture. For simple repairs, a quality aftermarket equivalent often matches well enough at a lower cost than hunting down an exact Barrette run. For a front-facing driveway that’s the first thing you see when you pull in, we’ll tell you honestly which approach looks right and which one will bug you every day.

One thing we’ve learned from two decades of South Florida paver work: Barrette pavers, like almost all concrete pavers, wear slightly faster here than manufacturers’ national averages suggest, especially if you’re on a canal-side lot with constant moisture or your driveway gets full western sun. Plan for visible surface fading around the 8- to 10-year mark and possible edge or joint issues sooner if the original base was thin.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Water pooling in the same spot after every rain. This almost always means the base under that section has settled or washed out, leaving a low spot. Ignoring it just lets more water in and accelerates the erosion. In Fort Lauderdale, where we get over 60 inches of rain a year, a small pool becomes a big problem fast.
  • Pavers rocking or wobbling when you step on them. A paver should sit dead flat. Rocking means the sand bed underneath has shifted or hollowed out, usually because water found a path through the joints. The fix often involves pulling the paver, re-leveling the sand, and compacting the area.
  • Sand washing out of the joints after heavy rain. You’ll see little piles of sand at the bottom of the driveway or hear grit under your tires. Without joint sand, pavers lose lateral support and start drifting apart. Re-sanding is a standard repair, but if it happens repeatedly, the base or slope probably needs attention.
  • Edges crumbling or spreading outward. Driveway edges need a stable restraint (typically a concrete border or plastic edge). When that fails, the outer pavers shift and crack. This is a common failure on older Fort Lauderdale homes where the original installation cut corners on edge restraint.
  • Cracks running through the middle of the paver, not along the joint. This usually indicates point pressure from below, often a rock or root that was left in the base. The paver itself failed, and swapping it is straightforward, but the underlying cause should be checked before you just drop in a replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Barrette paver work costs in the Fort Lauderdale market, based on jobs we’ve priced and completed:

  • Full paver driveway installation (new base, typically 400 – 600 sq ft): $7,000 – $18,000
  • Spot repair (replace 5 – 15 pavers, re-level sand, re-sand joints): $350 – $1,200 depending on access and paver size
  • Edge repair and re-restraint (common failure point): $800 – $2,500 depending on linear footage
  • Re-sanding and compacting an existing driveway: $500 – $1,500 for a typical two-car drive

The big variable in any paver quote is the base. If the original base was thin, we’re not going to lay new pavers on top and hand you a bill for work that’ll sink again in two years. We’ll quote the base rebuild as a line item and tell you why it matters. Every quote includes the written price before work starts, the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing, and the same crew in uniform doing the whole job.

As an independent contractor, we’re not affiliated with Barrette directly. But we work with their pavers and compatible equivalents often enough to know their specs, their wear patterns, and their warranties.

DIY or Call Us?

Paver work is one of the safer home projects. A single cracked paver in a low-traffic spot is something a handy homeowner can swap in an afternoon if they have a matching replacement. The honest problem: matching without waiting weeks for a special order, and the base work underneath that you can’t see. If a paver has sunk, pulling just that one stone without addressing the base is like putting a bandage on a leak. The paver will sink again.

What you can safely do on your own: take photos, measure the pavers, check for obvious water pooling, and watch how water moves across the surface during the next rain. What we’d recommend against: pulling out a large section to investigate without knowing how the base was installed or what’s under it. If you find the spot is worse than expected, call (754) 551-2922. We’ll come out, take a look, and give you a written number for the fix.
