PGT Windows & Doors: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
PGT window and door replacement in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $450 – $2,800 installed per unit depending on the part, glass package, and whether we’re swapping a roller, a balance, a seal, or the entire sash. We stock common PGT-compatible hardware on our trucks and can usually match your failed part within one visit. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: a window that suddenly drags, a sliding door that grinds on its track, or a small crack in the frame that lets humid air and afternoon rain find a way in.

PGT built its reputation in Florida for a reason. These are impact-rated windows and doors engineered for hurricane zones, and when they fail, it’s rarely because the product was bad. It’s because a roller seized after years of salt air, a balance spring fatigued from daily use, or a seal dried out under a Fort Lauderdale sun that doesn’t let up. We handle the repair or replacement, and we’ll tell you honestly whether the part is worth fixing or if the smarter money goes into a new sash or panel. Before we touch anything, you’ll have a written price in hand.
Which PGT Models This Applies To

We service the full range of PGT WinGuard, PGT PremierVue, PGT 5500 Series, PGT 7700 Series, and PGT Eze-Breeze vertical sliding windows, plus PGT sliding glass doors, French doors, and casement units. The part you need depends on the series, the glass type, and the original installation year. The easiest way to identify yours: open the sash or panel and look for a small white or silver label on the frame edge or corner. PGT prints the series number and glass package there, usually in faint ink that has survived years of sun better than you’d expect.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people hit: PGT WinGuard impact windows use a heavier, thicker sash than standard PGT units, and the rollers, balances, and weatherstripping are not interchangeable. A roller sized for a regular 5500 sash will sit wrong in a WinGuard frame and fail within months. Aftermarket parts exist and can save real money, but only if they’re matched to the exact weight of your glass panel. We default to PGT OEM hardware when it’s still manufactured; when it’s discontinued, we source equivalents rated for the same load. Either way, the part gets checked against your specific sash before we install it.

Signs Your PGT Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Sliding door or window drags, sticks, or jumps the track. The rollers are worn flat or the track has collected a decade of sand and salt. PGT stainless rollers last years longer than plastic aftermarket ones, but even they give out eventually.
- You hear a scraping or grinding noise. That’s metal on metal, which means the roller bearings or the balance assembly have failed and the sash is now riding directly against the frame. Running it longer scores the track, which doubles the repair cost.
- Window won’t stay open, or drops hard when you release it. This is a failed block-and-tackle or spiral balance. The spring has fatigued. On heavier WinGuard impact sashes, this part is under constant tension and should be handled by someone who replaces them regularly.
- Condensation or fog between the glass panes. The insulating glass unit seal has blown. Moisture inside the IGU means the argon or krypton fill is gone and the window’s insulating value has dropped. This is a glass pack replacement, not a hardware fix.
- Visible rust, corrosion, or cracked weatherstripping around the frame. Fort Lauderdale’s humidity and salt air corrode hardware faster than you’d think. Frame pins, corner keys, and weatherstripping are cheap parts, but left alone they strain the bigger components until something expensive gives.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Fort Lauderdale homeowners, expect PGT parts and labor to land in these ranges: roller replacements run $90 – $280 per panel, balance replacements $180 – $450 per window, weatherstripping and seal replacement $120 – $350 per unit, IGU glass pack replacement $350 – $1,200 per sash depending on impact rating and glass size, and full sash or sliding door panel replacement $800 – $2,800 per unit. Every price includes the part, the labor, the old part hauled away, and a written guarantee on the repair.
What drives the range is mostly glass. A standard PGT clear IGU costs far less than a laminated impact-rated WinGuard IGU with low-E coating and argon fill. Frame material matters too: aluminum units cost less to re-part than vinyl or the heavier pultruded fiberglass frames PGT uses on higher-end lines. You’ll know your number before we start. We write it down, you approve it, and that’s the number on the invoice. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies here the same as it does on a full remodel. If the part fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, written on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely check yourself before calling. Clean the track with a dry brush or vacuum. Tighten loose handle screws with a screwdriver. Look at the weatherstripping to see if it’s torn or pulled away. Those inspections are safe and useful, and they help us diagnose faster when we arrive.
But balances and rollers on PGT impact-rated units are not beginner work. A balance spring on a heavy WinGuard sash is under enough tension to break a finger or send a tool flying. Removing a sash that weighs 80 pounds or more on your own is how windows end up cracked on the patio stones. That’s not a scare tactic. It’s just physics. If the part is a roller, balance, or anything involving the sash itself, call (754) 551-2922. We’ll show up with the right part, a written price, and the tools to finish it same day.
FAQs

An impact-rated PGT window or door frame can last 30 to 50 years in South Florida, but the moving parts (rollers, balances, weatherstripping, seals) typically need replacement every 8 to 15 years because salt air, humidity, and daily use break them down faster than the frame. The glass itself should last the life of the unit unless the seal fails. If your PGT is 10 to 15 years old and starting to drag or fog, that’s normal wear, not a defective product. Call (754) 551-2922 for a free estimate on getting it working right again.
Sometimes a roller or track just needs cleaning and lubrication, which we’ll do on the spot for a small service fee if that’s all it needs. But once a roller bearing is flat-spotted, a balance spring has snapped, or an IGU seal has blown, that part is done and needs replacement, not repair. We’ll tell you which situation you have before any money changes hands, and you’ll get that answer for free during the estimate. Call (754) 551-2922 to schedule a look.
Most roller, balance, and weatherstripping replacements take 45 minutes to 2 hours per window or door, and we can usually do several units in one visit. Full sash or panel replacements take 1 to 3 hours each depending on size and access. Glass pack replacement for a blown IGU typically takes 2 to 3 hours because the old sealant has to be cut out cleanly before the new unit goes in. We’ll give you a realistic time window before we start. Call (754) 551-2922 for a specific timeline on your job.
We keep common PGT-compatible rollers, balances, handles, locks, and weatherstripping on the truck, which lets us finish most hardware replacements in one visit. Odd-size IGUs, custom sashes, and certain WinGuard impact glass packs take 5 to 10 business days to source because they are built to your specific dimensions and glass package. We’ll tell you on the first call whether your part is a same-day fix or a special order. Call (754) 551-2922 and we’ll check while you’re on the phone.
