Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
If you have a Therma-Tru door or window product in your Fort Lauderdale kitchen and you’re planning a remodel around it, the work typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, layout changes, and how much structural work the opening needs. We stock and install Therma-Tru-compatible entry systems, and we match replacement frames, thresholds, and weatherstripping to the original model rather than forcing a generic fit. Most Fort Lauderdale homeowners discover they need this work when a door that’s been fine for years suddenly sticks in the frame after a humid summer, or when the threshold (the raised lip at the bottom of the door) starts letting water in around the edges during a hard afternoon downpour.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
Therma-Tru builds fiberglass and steel entry doors, sidelites, and transoms across several series lines: the Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star, and Pulse series are the ones we most often work around in Fort Lauderdale kitchens. The compatibility question matters because a Classic-Craft door slab is not a drop-in swap for a Smooth-Star frame. Therma-Tru machines their frames and slabs in matched pairs, and the hinge and weatherstrip geometry changed between some generations. Before we quote anything, we determine the series from the label on the hinge edge of the door slab (most original doors still have the factory sticker with the series name and size code), then measure the rough opening, the slab thickness, and the hinge spacing. That tells us two things right away: whether the original product can be matched or improved on, and whether the existing frame is square enough to keep. Penhallow Remodeling Fort Lauderdale is an independent contractor, not a Therma-Tru dealer or affiliate, so we’re free to quote the OEM part and a quality aftermarket equivalent side by side when one exists. For Therma-Tru specifically, the OEM threshold and sweep are worth sticking with in coastal Florida. The factory sweep is sized to the door’s specific bottom profile, and the OEM threshold has weep channels (small drainage gaps that let water out instead of pooling behind the door) sized for South Florida’s rainfall. The aftermarket versions often fail there first. That said, a well-built aftermarket door slab from another fiberglass manufacturer can sometimes save a homeowner 20 – 30% when the frame is still in good shape, if the kitchen layout calls for shifting the door swing or resizing the opening anyway. We’ll walk you through that math before any work starts.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Water pooling on the kitchen floor near the door after a storm. This usually means the threshold’s weep channels are clogged with debris or the threshold has settled away from the slab. Left alone in Fort Lauderdale’s wet season, this rots the subfloor under the tile and spreads into the adjacent cabinets.
- The door rubs or sticks at the top corner, but only in summer. Heat and humidity swell the frame and the slab slightly. If the door was shimmed without clearance for South Florida’s seasonal movement, it binds. The fix is re-shimming the frame, not planing the door.
- The latch only catches when you lift the handle hard. Over time, the hinge screws back out of the frame, dropping the slab a quarter inch. In most Fort Lauderdale homes, the jamb is soft enough that longer screws alone don’t hold. We repair the hinge mortise or replace the jamb leg.
- The sweep (the rubber flap on the door bottom) hangs loose or catches on the tile. This is almost always a failed sweep retaining channel on Therma-Tru doors. The factory part is a $15 – $40 piece, but the aftermarket versions often tear within a year in Florida humidity.
- The door frame shows dark stains below the threshold or along the base. This is water wicking through the rough opening. By the time it’s visible, the surrounding subfloor and possibly a cabinet base have been wet for months. This is the one that turns a $500 repair into a $5,000 remodel, and it’s the reason we never ignore a small drip.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Therma-Tru door, frame, or threshold replacement inside a Fort Lauderdale kitchen remodel, the installed price typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 when combined with cabinetry, countertop, and layout work. That’s not a door-only number; it reflects that in a kitchen remodel, the door work is usually coupled with tile, cabinet runs, and countertop changes in the same opening. If the door alone needs replacing and the kitchen doesn’t need reconfiguring, the figure drops considerably below the low end of that range.
What drives the number up in Fort Lauderdale specifically: whether the rough opening has to be re-framed (common after water damage behind the threshold), the cabinet line and countertop material you choose, and whether the layout change requires moving plumbing or electrical. What’s included in our written price: all parts (with the OEM or aftermarket choice itemized), labor, disposal, any needed re-shimming, flashing, caulking, and interior trim repair, and the written 365-day warranty on the full job. The price we put in writing on day one is the price on the final invoice. If the work fails inside that guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: run a thin piece of paper around the door to find where the seal is broken, check the weep channels on the threshold for sand and debris, and look for water stains at the bottom corners of the interior trim. What you shouldn’t do is try to re-hang a Therma-Tru slab or remove a threshold that’s still glued to the subfloor. Fiberglass slabs are tempered to the frame, and forcing a mis-aligned slab into a racked opening splits the corner seams or cracks the finish, which no warranty covers. Removing a threshold properly often exposes rotted wood that needs to be cut out and re-framed before anything else goes back in. If you’ve found water, the right next move is a free estimate. Call (754) 551-2922 and we’ll send someone out to look at the opening and tell you what’s actually wrong and what it costs to fix it properly.
FAQs

A Therma-Tru door properly flashed and sealed in Fort Lauderdale should last 20 to 30 years as a slab, but the threshold and sweep typically need attention every 5 to 8 years because of the salt air and wet season. If the opening was not flashed correctly at installation, the frame can fail in 5 years. Call (754) 551-2922 for a condition check on your existing door and opening.
Frames, hinges, thresholds, and sweeps can all be repaired or replaced as individual components; a cracked fiberglass slab usually cannot. Most Fort Lauderdale kitchens with a failed Therma-Tru door can keep the slab and get by with threshold, hinge, or jamb work for far less than the price of a new door assembly. The exception is a slab that has cracked or been force-fit into a racked opening.
If the opening is square and the subfloor is solid, the door, threshold, and trim swap usually takes one working day. If water damage has reached the subfloor or surrounding cabinets, we’re looking at two to five days because framing repair and material drying have to happen before the new parts go in. We’ll give you a written arrival window and a realistic timeline before any work starts.
We stock the common failure items on the truck: thresholds, sweeps, hinge sets, weatherstripping, and threshold screws in the common Therma-Tru sizes. Full door slabs and custom-sized replacement frames are ordered per job, and in Fort Lauderdale they’re usually at our shop within 5 to 10 working days. We’ll tell you before you sign what’s on hand and what has a lead time.
